Marcus's Page

Marcus has been playing trombone since he was 11 - a very long time ago. He spent most of his teenage years playing in jazz and blues bands, dance bands, brass bands and orchestras, and struggling to learn the piano. He then went off to study music at Sheffield University, where he continued to play as a freelance in all sorts of ensembles from jazz bands to symphony orchestras, and also co-founded a free-improvisation group, AMG. Since then he has been involved in all kinds of music-making, working as a composer and arranger, and playing in jazz, funk, dance and blues bands, as well as directing or performing in classical ensembles.

At the moment he plays regularly in a jazz quintet, the Beef Wellington Orchestra (formerly Blue Sumatra), as well as various scratch jazz groups, and, of course, the Mad Hatters. He makes his living by tuning, repairing and restoring pianos, and as a freelance editor and writer on musical topics.
